one of the hardest questions you'll ever get asked is

"what's your favorite movie?"

i thought about mine today. there are, of course, too many to name. but i have decided that 3 top ones are cinema paradiso (this kills me), scent of a woman (al pacino kills me), and the shawshank redemption (because it's also favorited by 50% of the population aged 27~50).

i suddenly realize they are all about men, or rather the relationship between two men--an old theatre projectionist with his young friend who later becomes a filmmaker, a blind retired soldier with his prep school caregiver, and a wrongfully accused man with his trusted jail mate. these bonds seem to have moved me a lot more than romantic ones. i wonder why that is. maybe they simply stand out amidst a plethora of romances with outcomes that are all too often predictable. it's somehow so much more touching and compelling to see men open up with each other to form these bonds, because we don't see them enough in real life. hmm boys should really be more open with their feelings. or not. i guess we like them better all closed up. hmm.
