"everything is the way it is because everything was the way it was"--alexander, in "everything is illuminated"
i don't think this is particularly philosophical or enlightening, but there's something about this sentence when i read it that made me stop and my eyes linger over it for a few moments. it's nothing new, as straightforward as a math equation. but i suppose it was the context that made it sound especially melancholy, with a hint of helplessness, yet understanding, then acceptance.
it is with this mentality that i view everything that happens in my life now. i see everything as a precursor and/or a consequence, and somehow this makes everything all the more interesting, like a movie. and if something really happens out of the blue and leads nowhere, then i store it under "random," which is the most fun of all.

i guess it depends on your mood and context. to me, there is an inevitability to that quote that is defeatist and constraining: there is no such thing as "change"; everything is as it was.
but the more i read it, i also pick up something that is comforting and nostalgic. perhaps it's more about evolving than abrupt transformations--and that is good enough.
i think this means you're growing up.
