went to see lust, caution 色戒 tonight with kymmie. in some ways it was helpful to have read the story, as every gesture every look seemed to have hidden meaning and it felt important to have an omniscient knowledge of the settings. but it was also interesting to have gone with someone who had no previous understanding of the plot or background, and watch her emotions flow and ebb as the film progresses.

not surprisingly the movie is not getting raving reviews in the west. you kind of have to be chinese to get it, if not chinese who understands the historical context. a little bit like lee's brokeback mountain, the emotions were subdued and yet explosive. he's a master indeed at handling love in a conflicted choking manner; it stops your breath short, literally.

and i will say this here for the record. 梁朝偉 is sex personified. he is sex in a suit.
