sudden words of wisdom that only come with age

on hiking trail to see monkeys, for which we paid 520 yen a head.

cousin: (huffing & puffing) i don't think this was worth it
me: everything is worth it. you may not see it now. but one day someone's going to ask you whether you've ever climbed a mountain in japan. well NOW YOU HAVE!

"you can try to kill it, or try to live with it. but you cannot be afraid of it." --me, on cousin's reaction to big ants on a hiking trail

Ants...I can live with, even the gigantic ones in Bali that measure to about, 1.5 cm long. But cockroaches, I will forever be fearful. I have neither the courage to live with them, nor the courage to near them and kill them....
